1. OVERVIEW OF THE NORTH-EAST CORAL REEF IN THE PHU QUOC

Often referred to as the “coral city” of South Phu Quoc Island, the Northeast coral reef stands out as one of the most stunning coral formations in Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam, boasting a rich array of coral species. Situated 16 kilometers south of Phu Quoc Island, the North-east Coral Reef presents a challenge to access throughout the year due to its geographical location, which is frequently affected by strong currents and waves. Characterized by depths ranging from 1 to 9 meters and a remarkable diversity of hard and soft corals, this reef hosts a vibrant coral community, resembling a miniature underwater city. 2. CORAL SPECIES OBSERVED IN THE PHU QUOC NORTH-EAST CORAL REEF BY ONBIRD

Upon our expedition to the Northeast Coral Reef for discovery snorkeling and scuba diving, we have identified approximately 23 distinct coral species, including but not limited to:

Snorkeling & diving in Phu Quoc Island - Northeast Coral Reef

In the Northeast coral reef, snorkelers and divers are treated to a spectacle of impressive coral formations. This includes expansive gardens featuring table corals measuring between 1.5 to 3 meters in width, pillar and plate coral gardens spanning 4 to 5 meters, sea anemone gardens flourishing at depths of 2 to 5 meters, and flowerpot gardens covering approximately 6 to 8 square meters. Furthermore, at depths ranging from 3 to 6 meters, one can discover Giant barrel sponges (photos below) encircled by sea urchins and anemones. Notably, the Northeast Coral Reef’s secluded location contributes to the robust health of its coral ecosystem, which remains largely untouched and exhibits minimal damage. Observations by OnBird indicate an exceptionally low coral mortality rate of 0%.

The Northeast Reef displays optimal underwater visibility ranging between 9 to 10 meters throughout the year, as documented by OnBird, particularly during the rainy season. Conversely, the poorest visibility recorded is between 2 to 2.5 meters, contingent upon varying water conditions at different times of the year and throughout the day.
