In this post we would like to introduce one of other beautiful treasure of Phu Quoc sea, it is Phu Quoc Twin Helmet-shaped Massive Coral. Among many species of hard coral in the Phu Quoc water, one of the most popular that we have found out that is Massive Coral or Rock Coral with the rock-like outward appearance. As experienced divers or free-divers know that this kind of coral usually located in deep waters, its quite rare to see them at the depths of 1-2 m, by the reason we found out the presence of Phu Quoc Twin Helmet-shaped Massive Coral at the depth of 4 – 5 meters at the fringing reef – Half-moon Reef which is 16 km away from the An Thoi harbor in the An Thoi archipelago or Southern water of Phu Quoc island. Due to the cloudy water on the date, we found the coral, therefore, the quality of photos is not really good and you find a trace of difficult to recognize overview of the Phu Quoc Twin Helmet-shaped Massive Coral as well as another massive coral growing twin behind (in the photos above and the following photo) but there is not only one Helmet-shaped coral as you see.

The height of the Phu Quoc Twin Helmet-shaped Massive Coral that we witnessed with naked eyes is almost 3 meters, really fascinating, terribly big when staying close to the coral at the near distance to the seabed. The diameter of the Big one in the coral colony is about 3 meters with an outward appearance that is exactly similar to a Helmet.

The image above is the feet of the Big in the coral colony, this is one of the identification signs of a Massive coral with an outer covering looking like mushroom feet. A bunch of different species of hard coral growing at the seabed around the Helmet-shaped coral.

From the depth of 2 meters, we are able to see the top of the Phu Quoc Twin Helmet-shaped Massive Coral. Many inexperienced will ignore this amazing exploration because of the rock-like outward appearance of the coral. To continue to dive 3 or 4 more meters to obtain clearer visibility and enrich your sense with the extremely incredible size of the coral.

We still a little bit difficult in identifying the coral in the image captured at the depth of 4 meters, it looks not really attractive from this view. But keep diving down and reach the depth of 5 meters and encounter with the small coral in the twin colony with a few Golden Leather coral surrounding, you will start feeling it worth discovering more this one.

Getting closer to the surface of the massive coral, you see millions of polyps, evidence of a living entity undersea but not rock or an inanimate entity.

Swimming along the surface and witnessing millions of polyps like millions of eyes looking at you, not colorful but kind of special, the diameter of the small massive coral is around 4 – 5 meters.

And below, the surface of the big entity of the coral with a true helmet-shaped appearance. Swimming along the coral you will obtain the experience as if you are swimming along with a whale.
