WHAT IS INTERESTING ABOUT THE BEACH?
Top North Phu Quoc island is considered an untouched part, where you can still find dense green jungle, a nice beach. However, tourism is on a strong rise so you may find crowds of tourists at most of the places you visit. For example, Starfish Beach was quite deserted just 2 years ago, but for now, it has become more touristy as people usually prefer to check in with starfish even the beach is not really nice as it is located right at the estuary, there is a lot of sea-grasses and black sand in the water.
But don’t worry, there is another hidden place that you could find completely quiet and peaceful, especially very clean seawater. It’s Bãi Hàm Rồng (or Phu Quoc Dragon beach) which is a white sand beach, with turquoise shallow water backed by dense jungle, definitely untouched by resorts/ mass tourism.
HOW TO ACCESS TO THE BEACH?
Note: This guide is updated as of 28 March 2023.
People think this heaven-like place is only accessible by boat but for us – the adventurous souls, we highly recommend you to take a hike from Rach Vem (Starfish beach to Dragon Beach). It’s only more than 1 km but it’s worth your exploration and also saves cost! (The beach is free to walk if you encounter a patrol so dont worry but keep moving forward, rangers just prevent you from walking into the jungle but not the beach)
Meanwhile, the 10-minute boat ride which can be arranged from any of the seafood restaurants on neighboring Rạch Vẹm beach costs you around 150,000 – 170,000 vnd/ person (depending on your group size), hiking is far more relaxing and offers you a lot to explore on the way.
Check out the footage we recorded from our morning hiking from Rach Vem (Starfish Beach) to Dragon Beach.
You could not find the beach on Google Maps but on OnBird’s map below! The heaven-like place – Phu Quoc Dragon Beach (Ham Rong Beach) is just around 1 km away from Starfish Beach (Bãi Sao biển) on the right coastline. To enjoy the journey itself is more important than just to reach the destination. And for us, we always recommend our guests crowd-avoiding routes to explore the unseen beauty of Phu Quoc island.
There are a lot options of for local restaurants here, you can just drop your vehicle at one of the restaurant areas (such as Con Sao Quan or Ngan Sao Quan) and then start to take a hike along the coastline.
There is not any motorbike lane to take a ride there, you could walk along the coastline on the right way to Starfish Beach or find a wooden boat at a moderate price to transfer your group there, it would be a nice beach to set up a BBQ at the beach.
The idea of setting up a BBQ at Dragon Beach is very nice, buy fresh seafood right at the fish farm nearby, get on the boat to a heaven-like locale, while away the time by the jade sea, the jungle behind, no noisy sounds from big groups of people.
If not, you can come back to the previous restaurant where you drop your vehicle then have a seafood meal here. The price is reasonable and the seafood is fresh.
We have a Facebook community named “Phú Quốc Charming” beside our fanpage to connect the souls who also seek the off-the-beaten paths to discover Phu Quoc island. You can join us and share your experiences as well.

WHEN SHOULD YOU VISIT?
It’s worth keeping the following information in mind if you’re planning a trip to Phu Quoc. There are no hotel restaurants in the area, which means that the seawater is generally clean. It’s best to go during the dry season, which runs from October to early April. However, from October to November, there may still be occasional late-season rain which can make the sky gloomy and uninspiring. So, be sure to check the weather forecast before planning your trip.
During the summer months, which last from May until October, the period between May and July usually boasts beautiful sunny days. However, due to changes in wave direction, the Ham Rong area can become cloudy, and debris can be swept in by the waves. The best time to visit the area is still from November to March.
More detailed information about Phu Quoc’s weather by month can be found elsewhere.
If you’re a foreigner looking to ride a motorbike to the Northern area of Phu Quoc, through the National Park, where facilities are still poor and there are no or weak lights, especially in the evening, it’s important to take precautions. The best time to start your ride is in the morning, and you should aim to finish by 4:00-5:00 PM at the latest if you’re not used to riding at night in Vietnam. This will help you avoid motorbike accidents. Alternatively, you can start your journey in the early afternoon to ensure you return to the centre before the sun has set. If you leave it too late, you may struggle with the forest lane, which has almost no road lights.
