Phu Quoc Tourism Outlook: New Initiatives and Highlights for the Holiday Season

As the Vietnam’s National Day (September 2nd) holiday season approaches, Phu Quoc is not only welcoming domestic visitors but also witnessing a fresh wave of international tourism with numerous expanded direct flights and billion-dollar infrastructure projects underway, promising immense potential to become a premier international destination in the region.

This transformation isn’t just reflected in numbers but also in service quality and long-term vision. With systematic investment from both the government and private enterprises, the pearl island is gradually establishing its position on Asia’s tourism map, aiming to become a destination that can compete with renowned islands like Phuket, Bali, or Jeju.

Aviation Expansion – Phu Quoc More Accessible Than Ever

Direct Flights from South Korea Open New Opportunities

Since late July 2025, Eastar Jet has officially launched direct flights from Busan to Phu Quoc with an initial frequency of two flights per week. Notably, from September 3rd, this frequency will increase to four weekly flights on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, meeting the growing travel demand from the Korean market.

The launch of routes from Busan not only creates convenience for travelers from South Korea’s second-largest port city but also connects with the entire southeastern region of Korea. This is particularly significant as Korean travelers are increasingly interested in tropical destinations, seeking experiences different from traditional regional trips.

Wave of Russian Flights Promising to Boom

The Russian market is emerging as one of Phu Quoc’s most important visitor sources. Later this year, beyond existing routes from Moscow and Krasnoyarsk, numerous charter flights are expected from major cities including Samara, Yekaterinburg, Irkutsk, Kazan, Novokuznetsk, and Novosibirsk. Particularly, routes from the Far East region like Vladivostok, Blagoveshchensk, and Khabarovsk are also anticipated to begin operations.

This expansion encompasses not only quantity but also vast geographical scope, from Europe to Russia’s Far East. This promises Russian visitors to Phu Quoc will increase significantly during winter 2025-2026, estimated at approximately 30-35% compared to the same period last year. With Russia’s frigid winter climate, Phu Quoc’s year-round warmth becomes an ideal destination for travelers seeking warmth and relaxation.

Singapore – Southeast Asian Gateway Expanded

Vietjet has announced increasing the Singapore-Phu Quoc route frequency to seven round trips weekly from December 23rd, 2025. This represents a considerable expansion from previous schedules, demonstrating the airline’s confidence in this market’s growth potential.

Singapore serves not only as an important market but also as a gateway connecting the entire Southeast Asian region and beyond to Australia and New Zealand. This frequency increase will facilitate transit passengers in Singapore connecting to Phu Quoc, opening opportunities to reach premium customer segments from distant markets.

Sun PhuQuoc Airways – Aviation Hub Ambitions

Alongside expanding existing routes, another noteworthy development is the emergence of Sun PhuQuoc Airways – Sun Group’s new airline. The carrier is completing final legal procedures, expected to begin ticket sales in late October 2025 and operate its inaugural flight by year-end.

Starting with a modern fleet of Airbus A321NX and Airbus A321CEO aircraft, Sun PhuQuoc Airways doesn’t just aim to serve domestic markets but also targets establishing Phu Quoc as a significant aviation hub, connecting directly with key markets including Japan, South Korea, and China. Notably, the airline is negotiating adding Boeing Dreamliner aircraft to its fleet to operate longer-range routes connecting Europe and the Americas.

Premium Charter Services Elevating Experiences

JetVina, Vietnam’s leading aircraft charter company, is expanding private flight services to Phu Quoc with a diverse fleet ranging from ultra-light jets to long-range intercontinental aircraft. This service provides flexible flight solutions for corporations and VIP clients worldwide seeking private and convenient access to Phu Quoc.

The emergence of charter services not only serves high-end clientele needs but also demonstrates Phu Quoc’s maturity in meeting diverse market segments. This particularly aligns with the growing luxury travel trend on the pearl island, where increasingly upscale resorts and premium services are developing rapidly.

Infrastructure Acceleration – Preparing for the Future

International Airport Expansion – Future Vision

The Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project is in its launch phase with ambitious vision and impressive scale. Plans to increase capacity from the current 4 million passengers annually to 18 million by 2027, and further to 50 million by 2050, demonstrate the determination to transform Phu Quoc into a regional aviation hub.

The project includes constructing additional runways and a new terminal (T2) designed with phoenix imagery inspiration, symbolizing rebirth and soaring high. With total investment exceeding 26.5 trillion VND for phase one alone, this project carries not only economic significance but also embodies the ambition to establish Phu Quoc as an international-class destination.

An Thoi Port Improvements – Multi-modal Connectivity

An Thoi Port is undergoing significant upgrades to meet growing logistics and tourism demands, particularly important as Vietnam prepares to host APEC 2027. Port upgrades serve not only cargo transportation but also facilitate cruise tourism, island hopping, and underwater sports activities.

The upgraded An Thoi Port will accommodate various cruise ships, large tourism vessels, and modern container ships, contributing to reduced logistics costs and enhanced Phu Quoc competitiveness. This is also crucial for developing MICE tourism (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) – a high-potential segment Phu Quoc is targeting.

Snorkeling Experiences – New Highlight

Among emerging tourism activities, snorkeling experiences to observe coral reefs and explore the ocean are becoming attractive trends, especially for international visitors. The waters surrounding Phu Quoc, with rich coral ecosystems and crystal-clear seas, create ideal conditions for underwater sports activities. To meet international visitors’ increasingly high demands, OnBird Phu Quoc has developed snorkeling experience programs for small groups, private groups, and families with young children, focusing on gentle, private, and safe experiences.

Developing professional, sustainable snorkeling experience programs not only meets increasingly demanding international visitor requirements but also contributes to marine environment protection through responsible tourism.
