SAILING BY ECO DINGHY & CATAMARAN IN PHU QUOC – AMAZING ACTIVITY!

Sailing By Catamaran Blog

Sailing in Vietnam by cruise, overnight yacht or day-time catamaran seems to be more popular to date. However, most catamarans you join are gasoline-powered, not friendly with the underwater environment. There comes green ecotourism, sailing by Catamaran mostly powered by the wind and cost-effectiveness in Phu Quoc island.

For you, does sailing rhyme with adventure but by respecting this beautiful world around you? If yes, sailing by Eco dingy or catamaran sailboats in Phu Quoc island is made for you.

PHU QUOC LOCATION & WEATHER

Up to North Vietnam, most of the sails are taken by luxury cruise/ overnight yachts, no adventurous experience you’ll gain from.

In South Vietnam, Mui Ne, Nha Trang, and Vung Tau in particular are renowned for Surfing and Sailing thanks to strong winds there. Phu Quoc Island is bestowed with one of the most beautiful seas in Vietnam. However, before 2019 and even until now, you probably haven’t heard of genuine sailing in Pearl Island. Or else, there are limited sources mentioning about this amazing sport in Phu Quoc.

Frankly, it’s true as Phu Quoc Island is beneath Ca Mau Cape thereby Phu Quoc is almost hidden from strong winds but only affected by monsoons. Unfortunately, when each seaside of the island is affected by strong & dangerous monsoon, sailing journeys hardly happen on that seaside.

The average wind speed in Phu Quoc Island on the calm side is 8 – 11 km per hour. In the days of strong wind, it would be around 16 – 18 km per hour or it depends on which side of Phu Quoc that you sail.

WHEN TO MAKE THE SAILS IN PHU QUOC ISLAND?

We would say that you can sail all year round in Phu Quoc Island. As the monsoons change constantly, thereby the appropriate locations for sailing also can be changeable.

To be clarified, in the Dry season (from October until April), it’s safer to do Sailing in the West side of Phu Quoc, but due to it becoming calm in the Dry season, you probably only enjoy a wind of 8-11 km per hour there. On the other hand, if you do Sailing on the East side of the island, there’s much stronger wind but also more dangerous for amateurs or first timers. So, usually in the Dry season, we could do Sailing in the Northern side of Phu Quoc Island, where you can start to sail to the West side and enjoy a wind speed of 16 – 18 km per hour but pretty wavy, not for the faint of heart.

In the Rainy season (May – October), we strongly recommend you not to do sailing in the West side due to huge winds and big waves if you are not a senior sailor, of course sometimes in the season the sea might become calm. Meanwhile, on our experience, it’s safer for sailing adventures on the East side in this rainy time.
