The day begins early, around 7:30 AM, while the island is still relatively cool and quiet.

Your first stop is Dinh Cau Shrine, dramatically positioned on rocks where the Duong Dong River meets the sea.

For generations, the shrine has been associated with Phu Quoc’s fishing communities. Local fishermen have traditionally come here to pray for safety and favourable conditions before going to sea.

From Dinh Cau, you continue along the Bach Dang waterfront and cross the old Duong Dong bridge.

Wooden fishing boats sit on the river while local life begins around you.

Depending on timing and your interests, there may also be an optional stroll through Duong Dong Market, offering a closer look at the island’s everyday food culture.

Traditional fish sauce is made by fermenting fish, particularly anchovies, with sea salt. Over time, natural enzymatic processes break down the fish proteins and develop the characteristic savoury flavour and aroma.

Inside a traditional barrel house, you can see the enormous wooden barrels used for the fermentation and ageing process.
